Clear Lake Green Space Under Threat
Late last year, the owners of Clear Lake Golf Club, the 178-acre course in Oakbrook and Oakbrook West, began talking to elected officials and Exxon management to convince them that the property deed restrictions should be lifted, i.e., to make way for 700 homes and some commercial development. Physically this golf course is not in our neighborhood. However, the impact of this development on all of Clear Lake will be enormous. Consider the flooding. Think about traffic (it is bad enough now!) The school system would be stressed, not to mention fire, safety and the environmental impacts.
Houston City Councilmember Addie Wiseman and Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia, and State Representative John Davis each have had meetings with Exxon officials to express their concerns about the proposal. Exxon has told them they will not consider releasing the deed restriction to allow for the proposed development unless and until all affected stakeholders approve. Whew. So far, so good.. But as we know from our experience with the drill sites, it’s not over yet.
The Clear Lake City Green Space Preservation Committee, a group of homeowners from all over Clear Lake, have taken on the task of fixing this potential problem for good. They are in the process of finding the solutions that will prevent this development from happening, even after the deed restriction expires (in 2021). Homeowners have spoken out against the development with over 3,100 signatures on the petition.
